What to Expect
  • Alternatives, Ideas and Motivation

As a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist helping thousands of clients, I’ve found that marriage and family coaching actually works faster and more effectively to promote change and get results than traditional “therapy”. The biggest difference is – coaching creates solution-oriented actions you can take in the present to make immediate changes in your situation.  Therapy traditionally is about analyzing the problem and focusing heavily on “feelings” and on the past, where no changes can occur.

Coaching can take you directly to the answers that will repair the damage, remove the problem, or fix the issue you want to change, rather than getting stuck in hurt feelings and the arguments that come from looking for someone or something to blame.  Since coaching is specific and customized to your particular situation and goals, you can typically get far more substantial results in far less time.  Whether it’s repairing a problem in your marriage, getting parenting ideas for an issue with your child, or working on a personal situation, most clients want to create the changes they seek as quickly as possible.  Find out what you can create….

Here are your options:

One-at-a-Time Sessions - $175 first visit / $150 for all others

– Pay with Insurance: see below

These appointments are designed for couples who want:

  • a quick “tune-up” or review of your circumstances
  • resolution on a specific issue you haven’t been able to overcome yet
  • suggestions how to implement the changes you already decided to make

In this format, you’re welcome to schedule sessions at your convenience, and come  as often as you feel it’s helpful. Sessions are 45 minutes in duration. Occasionally, clients find it useful to plan longer visits to work on the issues, so another option is to book an “extended session”.  Scheduling longer sessions better accommodates work requirements or geographical issues for those out-of-the-area clients, and simply means you request back-to-back sessions so you have more time with Julie.

You will have the ability to upgrade (at a discount) to one of the coaching programs after your first session.

This program is designed as a major intervention for couples, families or relationships which require extensive and intense observation and interaction to create the desired outcomes. It is often a “last resort” effort to prevent divorce, or termination of the relationship, but can also be used with chronic problems that have been resistant to correction.  Costs will be determined based on length of time required and which strategies or techniques are used.

In addition to many of the items listed in the Coaching Programs above, a customized Intensive Care Program may also include, but is not limited to**:

  • Half- or full-day private consultation
  • Home visits
  • Video recording, review and evaluation

**travel expenses not included

Insurance Payment Information

Insurance will not cover the coaching programs; however, your plan may cover the “one-at-a-time” sessions under specific conditions, some of which are listed below:

  1. Most insurance companies do not cover marriage counseling.  To determine if your plan does, call the 800 number on your card to check your benefits.
  2. This office only has a few contracts with certain insurance carriers, so you may not be able to use your insurance, even if it covers marriage counseling. Eventually we will be discontinuing all contracts with insurance companies.
  3. The main reason most people choose not to use insurance, even if they have it, is because in order to pay for sessions, all insurance companies require that the client be given a mental illness diagnosis, which will stay a permanent part of the client’s medical record and can be accessed just like a credit history or driving record by employers, credit companies, or others doing business with you.
  4. * Regarding client confidentiality, often clients think their sessions are “private” and the topics discussed are “confidential”. Sadly, this is not the case. Insurance companies can and do violate confidentiality by requiring therapist notes, treatment plans and other personal information before they will pay your sessions.
  5. Often prior to your first visit, insurance companies require a pre-authorization and they always restrict both the number of sessions you can have and the frequency. For example: they will not allow an extended session, even if  it’s more convenient for you or necessary for the situation.
